The Sensory Trust write:
Since March 2018, 4 of our dementia-friendly nature based groups have been taking part in our Arts Council funded project ‘Observations in Nature’. This project involved each group selecting themes under which to document their meet-ups, passing around 1 disposable camera per week to capture their themes in the places they visited. Some of themes include: ‘Texture and Touch’, ‘Looking Up’ and ‘Blue and Green’.
As well as using photography, the group have taken part in creative activities involving various media including painting, cyanotypes, poetry, texture rubbings and more! All of their work has been collated into a collection of photobooks, and will be displayed at Potager garden in a 3 week-long public exhibition. There will also be the opportunity for each group to visit the exhibition as part of one of their meet-ups in February/March.
The aim of the project has been to support our beneficiaries in taking part in active documentation of their shared experiences in nature, learning new/using existing skills and providing them with a bank of images which they can access at their leisure. The project has provided the groups with a shared topic of conversation, a focus to their walks/time in nature and another form of cognitive stimulation.
We’re so impressed by the work they have created, and would love to share it with you!
Hope to see you there!
